    Niyamgiri: Conflict of land rights and economic development

    Peopled by the Dongria Kondh, a particularly vulnerable tribal group, Lakhapadar in southern Odisha's Rayagada district was one of 12 villages from the Niyamgiri region that were in the news in April, 2013 after the Supreme Court empowered their village councils to take call on a bauxite mining project by the Odisha Mining Corporation (OMC) and Odisha Mining Corporation. It wanted to mine bauxite from the Niyamgiri hills for Vedanta's 1 million-tonne-per-annum (mtpa) alumina refinery in neighbouring Lanjigarh. All 12 councils unanimously voted against the project.
