If you don’t have ADSL service, you can use your NETGEAR DSL modem router (also known as a DSL gateway) in router mode with either a cable or a fiber optic Internet connection. You can also use the your modem router as a router with an existing ADSL modem if you don’t want to use the modem function on your device.
The fourth LAN port (LAN 4) can be configured as a WAN/Internet port if you want to connect your existing cable, fiber, or ADSL modem to your modem router. This article provides step-by-step instructions on how to configure your modem router as a router only.
To set up your NETGEAR DSL modem router in router mode to use with a separate modem:
- Power off your DSL modem router by unplugging all cables.
- Reconnect the power cable and wait for two minutes for the DSL modem router to boot up.
- Connect your computer to the DSL modem router’s LAN 1 port.
You can also connect to its wireless SSID.
- Launch a web browser from a device that is connected to your router's network.
- Enter www.routerlogin.net.
A login window displays.
- Enter your user name and password.
The user name is admin. The default password is password. The user name and password are case-sensitive.
The BASIC Home page displays.
- Click Basic > xDSL.
- From the drop-down menu, select Ethernet WAN.
- Click Apply.
Your settings are saved.
- Power off the DSL modem router by removing the power cable.
- Connect your ISP modem to the LAN 4/WAN port on the DSL modem router.
- Power on the modem.
- When the modem is fully booted and connected to your Internet service, power on the DSL modem router.
- Launch a web browser from a device that is connected to your router's network.
- Enter www.routerlogin.net.
A login window displays.
- Enter your user name and password.
The user name is admin. The default password is password. The user name and password are case-sensitive.
The BASIC Home page displays.
- Click ADVANCED > Setup Wizard.
- Select Yes and click Next to proceed.
The Setup Wizard automatically detects your Internet connection.
- Click Next to proceed.
- The DSL modem router establishes an Internet connection.
After your Internet connection is established, the Congratulations screen appears.
- Click Next.
The Setup Wizard prompts you to install any apps you might require.
- Select or deselect the apps you would like to install and click Next.
The Firmware Upgrade Assistant runs to check for any firmware updates.
When firmware is updated or verified, setup is complete.
