GODDESS LAKSHMI DEVI

GODDESS
LAKSHMI DEVI

Goddess-Lakshmi-Kanakadhara-Stotram

(These are just some interesting passages in reference to the Goddess Lakshmi Devi. I would like to especially bring out that even the Goddess Lakshmi Devi is wishing she could be with Gopinath in Goloka Vrndaban. Despite all kingly and godly opulences the Goddess Lakshmi Devi is wishing she had the Supreme intimacy of loving reciprocation with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Govinda, in Goloka Vrndaban.

There is a need to understand how God has a special place in the spiritual sky where He enjoys perfect love relationships with His eternal associates – eternally.

The Vaisnava devotees of the Supreme God aspire for residence in Vaikuntha, residence in Krsna-loka, and just wherever God wants them. God really only needs our love. We can and should spend money, other resources, or offer other services for God; however, God only really is looking for our love. God is all spiritual and everything as well as everyone in God’s abode is of the same spiritual substance. In God’s abode, the Spiritual Sky, there is no evil, everything and everyone is in goodness, all is eternal.

It can help to fear God or think of God as Father. However, when we like God as Father we are expecting God to provide us with so many things. We have learned in Bhakti Yoga that there are higher relationships with God.

Ultimately, we should be satisfied to have God’s Love. God is all-knowing and Omnipotent. God is the Supreme Controller. Not a blade of grass moves without God’s consent. Therefore, we should trust in God. We should believe in God. If we continue to have difficulty that is probably due to bad karma. However, our karma will continue to improve if we hold on to our faith, belief, and trust in God.

These passages were found in the Maha Vedabase research software – Thanks to His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and his followers. )

[Srimad-Bhagavatam (10.47.60):
nayam sriyo ‘nga u nitantarateh prasadah
svar-yositam nalina-gandha-rucam kuto ‘nyah
rasotsave ‘sya bhujadanda-grhita-kantha-
labdhasisam ya udagad vraja-vallavinam
“Neither the goddess of fortune, Laksmi, nor even the damsels of the heavenly kingdom can attain the facilities of the damsels of Vrajabhumi — and what to speak of others.”]

[The goddess of fortune, Laksmi, is sometimes envious of the tulasi leaves which are placed at the lotus feet of the Lord, for they remain fixed there and do not move, whereas Laksmiji, although stationed by the chest of the Lord, sometimes has to please other devotees who pray for her favor. Laksmiji sometimes has to go to satisfy her numerous devotees, but tulasi leaves never forsake their position, and the Lord therefore appreciates the service of the tulasi more than the service of Laksmi.]

[Maharaja Prthu points out that even the goddess of fortune, who is the constant companion of Lord Narayana, specifically wanted to hear about the Lord’s glories, and for the association of the gopis, who are pure devotees, the goddess of fortune, Laksmi, underwent severe austerities. The impersonalist may ask why one should bother chanting the Hare Krsna maha-mantra continually for so many years instead of stopping and trying for kaivalya, liberation, or merging into the existence of the Lord. In answer, Maharaja Prthu maintains that the attraction of this chanting is so great that one cannot give up the process unless he is an animal. This is the case even if one comes in contact with this transcendental vibration by chance. Prthu Maharaja is very emphatic in this connection — only an animal can give up the practice of chanting Hare Krsna. Those who are not animals but actually intelligent, advanced, human, civilized men cannot give up this practice of continually chanting Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.]

[In the Caitanya-caritamrta it is said that no one can receive the real favor of the Supreme Personality of Godhead without following in the footsteps of the gopis. Even the goddess of fortune could not receive the same favor as the gopis, although she underwent severe austerities and penances for many years. Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu discusses this point with Vyenkata Bhatta in Caitanya-caritamrta (Madhya 9.111-131): “The Lord inquired from Vyenkata Bhatta, ‘Your worshipable goddess of fortune, Laksmi, always remains on the chest of Narayana, and she is certainly the most chaste woman in the creation. However, My Lord is Lord Sri Krsna, a cowherd boy engaged in tending cows. Why is it that Laksmi, being such a chaste wife, wants to associate with My Lord? Just to associate with Krsna, Laksmi abandoned all transcendental happiness in Vaikuntha and for a long time accepted vows and regulative principles and performed unlimited austerities.’]

[The Lord has multifarious potencies (parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate [Cc. Madhya 13.65, purport]). Since mother Laksmi, the goddess of fortune, is the Lord’s very precious potency, she is addressed here as maha-maye. The word maya means sakti. Lord Visnu, the Supreme, cannot exhibit His power everywhere without His principal energy. It is said, sakti saktiman abheda: the power and the powerful are identical. Therefore mother Laksmi, the goddess of fortune, is the constant companion of Lord Visnu; they remain together constantly. One cannot keep Laksmi in one’s home without Lord Visnu. To think that one can do so is very dangerous. To keep Laksmi, or the riches of the Lord, without the service of the Lord is always dangerous, for then Laksmi becomes the illusory energy. With Lord Visnu, however, Laksmi is the spiritual energy.]

TRANSLATION
[If one desires all opulences, his duty is to daily worship Lord Visnu with His wife, Laksmi. With great devotion one should worship Him according to the above-mentioned process. Lord Visnu and the goddess of fortune are an immensely powerful combination. They are the bestowers of all benedictions and the sources of all good fortune. Therefore the duty of everyone is to worship Laksmi-Narayana.]

TRANSLATION
[Goddess Laksmi, whose glance is sought after by the demigods with great endeavor, has achieved the unique position of always remaining on the chest of her Lord, Narayana. Still, she desires the dust of His lotus feet, even though she has to share that dust with Tulasi-devi and indeed with the Lord’s many other servants. Similarly, we have approached the dust of Your lotus feet for shelter.]

[Srila Prabhupada comments that “when food is offered to Lord Krsna with love and devotion and He is pleased and accepts it from the devotee, Rukmini-devi, the goddess of fortune, becomes so greatly obliged to the devotee that she has to personally go to the devotee’s home to turn it into the most opulent home in the world. If one feeds Narayana sumptuously, the goddess of fortune, Laksmi, automatically becomes a guest in one’s house, which means that one’s home becomes opulent.”]

[Srila Rupa Gosvami, in his Laghu-bhagavatamrta, has quoted from the Padma Purana, where it is stated that Laksmi-devi, the goddess of fortune, after seeing the attractive features of Lord Krsna, was attracted to Him, and to get the favor of Lord Krsna she engaged herself in meditation. When asked by Krsna why she engaged in meditation with austerity, Laksmi-devi answered, “I want to be one of Your associates like the gopis in Vrndavana.” Hearing this, Lord Sri Krsna replied that it was quite impossible. Laksmi-devi then said that she wanted to remain just like a golden line on the chest of the Lord. The Lord granted the request, and since then Laksmi has always been situated on the chest of Lord Krsna as a golden line. The austerity and meditation of Laksmi-devi are also mentioned in Srimad-Bhagavatam (10.16.36), where the Naga-patnis, the wives of the serpent Kaliya, in the course of their prayers to Krsna, said that the goddess of fortune, Laksmi, also wanted His association as a gopi and desired the dust of His lotus feet.]
