News from the Hill Meet the Admission Office

This fall, Wilbraham & Monson Academy opened its 207th academic year with 345 students from 22 nations including the US. We welcomed 40 new students from Angola, Bangladesh, Canada, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Taiwan, Uganda, Venezuela and Vietnam. They joined our returning students from Argentina, Australia, Bulgaria, Montenegro, and Thailand. Congratulations to these hard-working members of the Admission Office! Appointed last spring, Robyn Boyer is the Director of Admission. Robyn joined WMA as Associate Director of Admission in 2004. Previously she had served as Director of Admission and Financial Aid at The Barrie School in Silver Spring, Maryland. In her role as Associate Director, Robyn was focused on day student admission, with a particular emphasis on middle school student admission. She and Charlie D’Avanzo, Director of the WMA Middle School, have developed a series of summer welcoming activities for middle school families that make the transition for new students a comfortable process. Associate Director of Admission Chris Sparks ’95 joined the Admission Office in 2008. Chris played Varsity Football and Varsity Basketball as a student at the Academy and played on the Varsity Basketball team at the University of Southern Maine. Since graduating from Southern Maine, Chris has built his profession around basketball. He served as assistant men’s coach at the University of New England, Brown University, and Central Connecticut State University before his appointment at the University of Pennsylvania in 2006. Chris’ focus in the Admission Office is on boarding students. He travels from coast to coast, showing families the advantages of a WMA education. Francesca DenHartog joined the office as Assistant Director of Admission in 2009. She works directly with day student admission and is very knowledgeable about women’s athletics at the high school and college level. She played on the Harvard varsity lacrosse team for four years and was co-captain her senior year. Named to the All-Ivy Lacrosse Team each year, Ivy Player of the Year in 1981 and 1982, and Lacrosse All American in 1982 & 1983, Francesca was inducted into the Harvard Varsity Club Hall of Fame in 1998. In October 2010, she was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Francesca has been the head coach of women’s lacrosse at Yale University and the University of Massachusetts. Wendy Bradley is Assistant Director of Admission. Most recently, she served as Dean of Students at the Vivian Webb School in Claremont, California. From 2007 to 2009, she was first the Dean of Students and subsequently Deputy Headmaster at King’s Academy in Jordan. Wendy was a member of the

Deans Office at Deerfield Academy for seven years, the last two as Dean of Students. She focuses her attention on international student admission and so does quite a bit of traveling for the office. This fall she is going to Germany, India, and Vietnam, and she will be visiting more countries in the spring. Barbara Conlon is Registrar and one of two administrative assistants in the Admission Office. She joined the staff in 2008 and is responsible for maintaining the admission database. Barbara inputs all inquiry and application information, generates all mailings, maintains the organization of all of the admission and financial aid files, and generates all statistical reporting for the Board of Trustees and other various organizations. The voice of Loretta Fograshy, the second administrative assistant, may be familiar to many of you. For several years, Loretta was our receptionist, and hers was the first voice you heard when contacting the Academy. Loretta continues to be a welcoming voice to many as she is the first contact for most when they reach the Admission Office. She is also the Designated School Official for Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) for international students. She processes all of the I-20s and the accompanying documentation.

Jung Il Chyun ’11 attended the National Young Leaders’ Conference October 19-24 in Washington, DC.

Summer in Cambridge Last summer, Eric Diogun ’11 traveled to Cambridge, England, through a program called “The Cambridge College Programme”. He studied at Cambridge University for three weeks, attending a leadership course and a British cultural history course. While there, he learned about the history of Cambridge, important people of England, the history behind the famous English spies, what makes a great leader, and how to become one. He says, “It was one of the best experiences I’ve had. I got to spend time with students of Cambridge University, as they were our group leaders, and I met some amazing people along the way. The program consisted of four hundred and twentytwo high school students from the United States, Germany, France, Spain, and Honduras. We took day trips to London and saw plays and explored the wonderful city; we visited Bath and toured the Roman Baths while there. We also toured Stonehenge, Parliament, Big Ben, museums, the National Portrait Gallery, the Tower of London and much, much more. “This experience opened me up to all that is out there and the importance of being a confident, strong person. It helped me learn more about myself, learn about history and psychology, and also have lots of fun along the way.”

Faculty Summer Work

Mathematics Department Chair Mark Fischer went to two math workshops in June. First was an AP Calculus workshop in Atlanta, part of the AP-sponsored summer Edventure program. The workshop leader for this program was Benita Albert who has been a writer, a reader (grader), and table leader for the AP Calculus test. Mark says, “The workshop was an excellent opportunity to share teaching ideas with peers, take a closer look a the various textbook options and support materials, and consider the role of technology in assisting students learning of math.” Mark, math teacher Sue Cole, and academic services tutor Steve Gray attended workshops sponsored by Texas Instruments their new calculator the TI N-Spire in preparation for our fall 2011 change to the new, more powerful technology; other members of the Mathematics Department will attend N-Spire workshops next summer. The new N-Spires, Mark says, are about 75% calculator and 25% laptop. The workshop offered good insight into not only how to operate the new technology but how to use it appropriately to enhance students’ understanding of math. Two cool things the machine will do: • Grab a line with the electronic hand, move the line, and watch the numbers of the equation representing that line change. • Update the calculator’s operating system from the Web. Science Department Chair Allen Hsiao, who has been reading AP Calculus exams for thirteen years, was a table leader again at AP Calculus grading session in Kansas City. As a table leader, he is consulted when a grader is not sure about the accuracy of a student’s answer. Gary Cook also served as an AP reader for the U.S. History exams. He says, “As a first-time reader I did not know fully what to expect, and the sessions were both arduous and rewarding, I came away feeling good about our AP students and their preparation, and I hope to be selected to read again, to be surrounded by 1,200 people who love US History was in itself quite a positive experience!”

The Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellows, some of the nation’s leading educators, gathered in Washington, DC on June 28-29, 2010, for a 20th Anniversary Summit. Hosted by the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the Summit brought together more than 80 current and former Einstein Fellows along with distinguished guest speakers from the White House, federal agencies, national education organizations, and the U.S. Congress. The goal of the Summit was to generate recommendations for informing and improving science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

AP Chemistry teacher Dr. Kathleen Gorsky was busy this summer, attending the International Polar Year-Oslo Science Conference, where she also attended the preconference Polar Science Teachers Workshop, and co-chairing the 20th Anniversary Summit of the Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellows in Washington, DC. The Polar Teachers Workshop took place at the University of Norway in Oslo, and the IPY-OSC met in Lillestrom. The conference was billed as the largest gathering of polar scientists ever, with over 2400 participants. Speakers discussed the results from their IPY projects across every science discipline and ranged from biodiversity to neutrino detection to photography and movies. Gorski’s talk, “IPY: Translating Teacher Knowledge to Student Experiences” was included in the session, “Learning together: The impacts of integrating education, outreach and research in IPY; Showcases.” It was well attended and well received, sparking many conversations that Gorski has continued in the months since. The international scope and collaboration of the 4th IPY was evident in every aspect of the meeting. Global science leaders spoke at the opening, as well as the Crown Prince of Norway, and His Serene Highness of Monaco.

Student Athletes in Summer Mode

Thomas ’13 and Phillip ’16 Cook divided their time this summer between two sports – baseball and golf – and two locations – Cape Cod and Wilbraham, which meant that they and their mother Robin spent hours and hours in their blue Town & Country van. These two gifted athletes refuse to give in to specialization, and they continue to hone their skills in both sports.

On the Cape Cod Junior PGA Tour, Thomas placed in the top five in all tournaments and was named player of the year in his age group. He also played in the Captains Junior Day tournament in Brewster, where he shot 82. In June, Thomas qualified at the Ledges for the 3-day MGA Junior Amateur Championship, open to the top 150 juniors in the state and held at Foxborough Country Club at the end of July. Although he failed to make the cut after 36 holes of play, he shot 87 & 86 in the pre-junior age division and is determined to qualify again next year.

The team earned the gold medal in the statewide competition held on July 10-11, dominating opponents throughout the tournament. Jeannette’s role as a libero, a position where being able to receive any type of serve is very important, and defense specialist contributed greatly to their success. When Rachael Kantor ’11 was selected to play for the Western United F.C. The team qualified for the U.S. Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup, which took place July 8-11 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and came away victorious. Matched up against three top-notch teams, Rachael and the Western United girls proved themselves to be the best through hard work and determination. Rachael says of the experience, “It was so Western United memorable even to attend a National Tournament with my team. I actually had goose bumps when we won the finals...even though it was easily 100+ degrees down there in Tennessee.”

program at WMA will help in recruiting top notch athletes. Many international students play the sport from a very young age and usually have very sound fundamental skills. The Academy is already known for its strong boys’ basketball program, so volleyball is a very natural second sport for them.

Rugby: state champs in their first year

By Coach Donna Barone

By Coach Tim Harrington

The sport of volleyball originated in the Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1895, and is just now achieving the type of popularity in the U.S. that it has received on a global basis, where it ranks behind only soccer among participation sports. Today there are more than 46 million Americans who play volleyball. There are 800 million players worldwide who play volleyball at least once a week. In the spring of 2009, WMA introduced a boys’ volleyball team at the club level. The team competed against several prep schools, including Choate, Phillips Andover, and Northfield Mount Hermon, as well as several local public school teams. They were invited to participate in the Founding Four Tournament. While the team did not achieve a winning record, they did establish themselves as a competitive new team in the prep school league. 2010 saw the team go from a club status to a varsity program. The 2010 season also saw several new boys try out for the team. Many had strong athletic abilities and solid volleyball fundamentals as well as height. As they say in volleyball, “You can’t teach height.” Several of the boys were talented basketball players, and their strong athletic abilities quickly translated to success on the volleyball court. Returning player Milan Drecun ’10 helped mold the new players into a solid on-court presence. The team quickly made a name for itself. It is hard to ignore a team with two 6’10” middles, Naofall Folahan ’10 and Peter Rakocevic ’10, a 6’8’’ outside hitter Gvozden Vukojevic ’10, 6’6” hitter Mitch Amelio ’10, 6”1” setter Andrej Pajovic ’11, and defense specialists Brendan Simons ’11 and Nelson Cheung ’13. Andrej, Brendan, and Nelson are returning in 2011. The 2010 team had a very successful season with wins over NMH and Choate in two matches apiece during the regular season and a split in two very competitive matches with Andover, both matches going to 5 sets. WMA earned the number 1 seed for the Founding Four Tournament, where the Titans easily defeated NMH, before losing in the final to Andover 3-1. Gvozden Vukojevic accepted a scholarship to play volleyball at Division II Lindenwood University, quite an accomplishment for Gvozden considering he only played the sport competitively his senior year at WMA. Coach Donna Barone believes that having a boys’ volleyball

On May 22 at Van Horn Park in Springfield, the first year Titan rugby team clinched the first ever Massachusetts state rugby championship. The Titans won the Plate division of the Massachusetts Youth Rugby Organization championship tournament by beating three established rugby clubs. “To get to the state finals and win in our first year goes simply beyond all expectations,” Coach Swanson declared. After winning their first two matches, the Titans faced a physical Worcester RFC side for the third time this season to determine the championship. Worcester had spanked WMA in its first game of the season in early April 38-17, and WMA had gotten payback in a rematch at the Amoskeag Invitational tournament, winning in a penalty kick duel. Three times is a charm, and this time WMA got the better of Worcester, winning 5-0. “This is a great group,” added Coach Harrington. “They deserved this. They worked hard all season and improved so much from where we started in March.” To get to the final, the Titans had to beat local rivals Springfield Rifles RFC U-19. Titan winger Maoi Marcelino ’10 scored an impressive three tries to lead the team to a 17-14 victory. The Titans next drew a tough Middlesex RFC team that had beaten the WMA squad at the Amoskeag tourney a few weeks earlier. The Titans jumped to an early lead on a try and conversion scored by Kanta Sugai ’11 as the Titan backline got the best of Middlesex. Middlesex answered to make the score 7-5 Titans at the half. Sugai scored another try early in the second half to make it 14-5, and the Titans battled to hold onto the lead right down to the final whistle. Earlier that week, the Titans had traveled to Meriden, NH to play the only other prep school rugby team in New England, Kimball Union Academy. In the first prep school rugby match since 1907, the Titans secured the historic victory in the “unofficial New England prep school championship” 11-8 on a try by Colin Scott ’10 and two penalty kicks from Sugai. The Titans finished the season with a 5-1 tournament record and a 9-3 overall record.

ince 2004, with the final adoption by the Board of Trustees of the strategic plan, “From Good to Great,” the Wilbraham & Monson Academy campus has been in transition. While the Head of School, the administrators, the faculty, and coaches have worked tirelessly to develop curriculum and athletic programs, the Board has been working similarly to provide the support and infrastructure to help these programs succeed. This partnership has allowed Wilbraham & Monson Academy to continue to evolve as an academic institution, and make its mark as an educational innovator and competitive prep school.

A key component of the Board’s role is the oversight of the financial support of the school. As such, Board members also make large donations to key campus projects. The following timeline provides an overview of some of the major accomplishments of the WMA Board over the past few years.

The renovation and expansion of Greenhalgh Gymnasium was one of the first large capital projects on the WMA campus in recent history. The gym, which originally included basketball courts and the Cowdrey Memorial Pool, as well as Athletic Department offices, was expanded to include a state-of-the art fitness center; a wrestling room/dance studio; a board room for meetings; expanded, renovated locker rooms for home and away teams; and a refurbished pool area. The new Athletic Center provides a showcase for WMA athletic programs that are on the rise. Since the expansion was completed, WMA has increased its coaching staff with some key members. What is the role of the Board, and a Board member, at WMA?

SBJ

The simple answer is that the Board is the body that governs the school, while the Head and administration are tasked with managing it. A more nuanced answer is

that the Board brings voice to a broad range of constituencies, including alumni, current families, and even generations of students not yet born. Every trustee’s responsibility is to maintain a long-range focus while guiding the school through everyday challenges, balancing the needs of each constituency.

The school has also added a new Boys’ Volleyball program with Head Coach Donna Barone, and a new Boys’ Rugby program with Head Coach Tim Harrington ’73. Funding for the new Athletic Center included multifaceted efforts. The initial leadership donation came from Trustee Ned Symes ’64, who provided funding for the building as well as the bond reserve fund that supports the capital project. The gift was substantially supported by gifts from Trustees Jim LaCrosse ’50, Carol Relihan ’73, and Steve Spence ’76. Additional funding was provided by a number of other alumni and friends of WMA, and a special fund was created by faculty members to honor WMA teacher and coach, the late Jane McNamara Kelly, in whose memory the fitness center was named. The year 2007 also saw the beginning of a multi-phased process to create new homes for faculty members. Numerous plans were considered to build three stand-alone faculty houses, and the final decision included the purchase of one pre-existing home next to campus, and the new construction Otherwise the Chair is an equal with all Trustees, one vote among many. The next year saw continued Board leadership in the area of athletic complex development. Another summer project that has had a huge impact on the WMA athletic program was the renovation and refurbishment of the athletic complex track and fields. Trustee and WMA parent David Callahan spearheaded this major family gift on behalf of his alumni siblings: Charles Callahan ’75, Julie Callahan ’78, and Jon Callahan ’81. The soccer fields, football field, and baseball diamond were refurbished as part of the project so that those teams now practice and compete on top-quality athletic fields. The Joffray family, led by Don ’46 and Sue, honored one of the Academy’s all-time beloved coaches and faculty members, the late Phil Shaw, with the main gift for a new track. Launch of the State-of-the-Art Trading Center

The Shenkman Trading Center (STC) was launched in the summer of 2009. The center, which is the first academic trading floor at an independent school, was created through the generous gift of Mark R. Shenkman ’61, who is also President and Chief Investment Officer of Shenkman Capital Management in New York City. The STC, located on the first floor of Mattern Hall, includes

16 workstations, state-of-the art educational technology, and software that allows a classroom to experience a simulated trading environment as well as Geographic Imaging Software, or GIS. The STC houses financial markets and entrepreneurship classes, and will also be utilized for student workshops and class modules throughout the school year. were all badly needed. But they were also enhanced by the innovative Mark Shenkman Trading Floor, which really sets the school apart. And now we’re just completing the addition of a beautifully renovated Campus Center, tennis courts, and we even have a new Main Street in front of Rich Hall. We have more to do, but these improvements have been a big factor in weathering the recession. I’m also proud of the Board for

providing the resources that Rodney LaBrecque needed in order to transition the school to a more selective and invigorated school. That transition required shrinking the school for a few years, and my fellow Trustees provided gifts that filled in for the missing tuition dollars. Without those gifts, we could not have made it to where we are today.

WMA

What are the goals of the Board going forward?

SBJ

Primarily, we want to continue supporting Rodney’s efforts to build a unique and exciting school. We’ll need to further improve the campus, but even more importantly, we will need to build an endowment that will serve the school through good times and bad.

Parents’ Association Partners with Board for Campus Center Renovation

This year has seen extensive Board participation in capital projects and academic programs. The third of our new faculty houses was completed. CEGS Director Walter Swanson and his family moved into the house over the summer. In addition to the completion of the faculty housing program was the creation of nine new tennis courts, funded by Palmer Paving and the Dooley, Rollings, and Wright families. The project involved demolishing the tennis courts on Faculty Street across from Corbin Fields, and recycling the surface to create nine new courts. The parking lot next to the courts was expanded at the same time. In 2009, the Parents’ Association launched a highly successful campaign to create a new Campus Center. Association president Deborah Joffray energized scores of parents, friends, and alumni to raise $741,399. Several in-kind donors were instrumental in achieving the great results visible in the renovated space, including the Mele family, including Alessandra ’09, Brooke ’11, and Andrew ’15, who generously provided windows. The Board of Trustees also participated, immediately seeing the value of a first-class Campus Center and wanting to endorse it with

The fundamental principles of the Academy have not shifted. But the nature of education has to change as the world and our operating environment change. We’ve had to respond. With the advent of quality day schools around the country, it was no longer a given that families needed to send their children away for a quality education. It became important that our school have a unique niche, with quality programs not found at our families’ local schools. The

more than words. Susan McKenna, new Board member and parent of Brandon ’11, pledged a generous capital gift to the project. Trustee Krista Hanson, parent of Adrianne ’10, did double duty raising funds as part of the Parents’ Association and logging countless hours of design work and project oversight. Kent Pecoy, another community-based board member, generously supported the project with contractor services from Kent Pecoy and Sons Construction. The Joffrays, in an effort spearheaded by Deb, provided a keystone gift to launch the fundraising push that put us over the goal. Board leadership also provided for faculty and program development this year in the area of global economics. Board member James LaCrosse ’50 provided a generous $100,000 match to the $50,000 grant from the E.E. Ford Foundation to help educate WMA faculty in the area of global economics. The LaCrosse Grant provides endowment for study tours for faculty in the area of global economics. creation of programs like the Center for Entrepreneurial & Global Studies, along with the Shenkman Trading Center, is an example of the changes that have reinvigorated the Academy and attracted quality students from down the street and around the world.

WMA

How can the alumni community help achieve the Board’s vision for the school?

SBJ

While the Academy is on solid footing, its small endowment leaves it somewhat vulnerable to global shocks. If a few years from now the Board could look back and see a stronger endowment that does more to ensure that footing, we would be very pleased. The next generation of Trustees and school leaders can then take the Academy to even greater heights, knowing they have the security they need to take risks and keep pace with a rapidly changing world.

Former Board Chair Peter Lincoln ’55 has been a generous donor for initiatives in multiple areas. His efforts have enabled the Academy to continue sustained progress in several ways. James LaCrosse ’50 has also provided continued support for a unique entrepreneurial endeavor developed by WMA students that may eventually provide an ongoing source of revenue for the school. Through a partnership with WMA, LaCrosse is funding the manufacturing, marketing, and sale of Blocks Rock!, a wooden block game initially created by WMA Middle

School students. The game was later developed, marketed, and manufactured as an experiential learning component of the WMA entrepreneurship program. LaCrosse is managing the next phase of the project with the expectation that revenue from the sale of the game can fund future WMA programs. As Wilbraham & Monson Academy moves forward, the board will undoubtedly continue to play a key role in supporting and developing the school. Taking their direction from the WMA mission and the continued effort to make the school an even stronger environment for student learning, the board will continue to help provide the support and infrastructure to help WMA academic, athletic, and extracurricular programs succeed.

Trustee Emeritus & Former Chair William A. Griffin ’68 and Linda Griffin.

Good Governance: Striking the Right Balance By William A. Griffin ’68 Newspapers have been full of articles of late concerning the apparent lack of attention paid by professional boards of directors to the actions of the companies they served and the failure of some of those companies to work on behalf of their stockholders. But what of the work of boards of trustees to the independent schools they serve? If you believe as Browning Associates, the consulting firm that Russ Browning, my wife Linda, and I have led for over four decades, does that independent schools function best when a team of leaders – trustees, head of school, key administrators – is in place, then the importance of the board becomes very apparent. The board’s role is to keep its eye on the big picture, particularly the school’s position in the larger marketplace. This means ensuring that the school adheres to its mission, attracting the appropriate head of school, helping the head of school lead effectively and happily, encouraging the school to reach ever higher so that it is the best it can be, giving generously to and raising money for the school’s top strategic priorities, and spreading the word so that the public is aware of the school and its quality. The role of the head of school is to work closely with the board to push the school ever upward in the marketplace by providing an excellent education and a safe, supportive, yet challenging environment for learning. Obviously, one of the key areas of board work is ensuring that the head of school remains effective. That begins with the search for the head. In an unhealthy situation, the search committee, exhausted by the work and expense of finding a new head, disbands, exulting in its success in identifying the school’s savior and leaving the head to his or her own devices. In the ideal scenario, by contrast, the search committee remains a cohesive group that stays closely in touch with the head in his or her first year, evaluating performance, ensuring family stability, and, in

The Academy World ·

general, checking in with the head so that the trustees have an in-depth view of the health of the school in the new head’s first year. Remember: the new head is the school’s most expensive and strategic investment. Thus it behooves the board to make that investment work to the school’s advantage for the longest time appropriate. It then becomes the head’s responsibility to educate the trustees about the current state of the school. This is essential for several reasons: so that board members learn something fresh at every meeting, so that they have sufficient confidence in what they hear to encourage them to recommend the school to friends and neighbors, so that they will invest their own financial resources in advancing the school’s mission, and so that they dare to challenge the head appropriately when he or she suggests something that they do not understand or do not like. The point here is to create an atmosphere of trust established on a firm foundation. Within a good leadership team, trustees and head of school expect open and healthy push-back from one another. Thus, if the dreams of the head of school seem unrealistic, it is the board’s responsibility to bring them back to a realistic level. And, if the board’s financial guidelines seem too conservative, a good head of school will challenge them in a forthright discussion in the boardroom. Ideally

Newly elected Trustee Susan C. McKenna. the team will be in balance, meaning that trustees and head have similar aspirations for the school. That balance is essential: the trustees will have to assure the funding, and the head will have to make the dream a reality on the campus. As indicated, another key board responsibility is fiduciary. Browning Associates has worked with schools that constructed new buildings without either sufficient giving by trustees or appropriate documentation of the financial contributions received for those projects, yet the boards never asked to see the books. We fear that those schools, especially those that are under-endowed, may fail when it’s time to pay the construction bills. Conversely, we have consulted with schools that were led by such fiscally conservative boards that they didn’t erect essential new buildings when they were needed and failed to expand their admission and development staffs in time to keep pace with the competition. Balance is needed in both situations. Finally, an often-overlooked board responsibility is realistic optimism. We have seen the tone of the boardroom change depending on the nature of the leader. Other factors may not change, but if the board chair brings a can-do attitude to his or her leadership, then many things become possible. And positive change tends to follow that optimism. Looking at Wilbraham & Monson Academy, I am delighted to see Scott Jacobs and Rodney LaBrecque working so closely and smoothly together. As the key leaders,

they have brought fresh energy and perspective to the boardroom and the campus, and their enthusiasm is spreading. The campus looks beautiful and benefits yearly from some construction or renovation project, the administrative team speaks eagerly about the mission, and, most important of all, the students are thriving. I am proud to be an alumnus of a school that is clearly on the move. Bill Griffin, Trustee Emeritus, served as an Academy Trustee from 1987 to 1997, and was chair for the last five of those years. He is chairman of Browning Associates, Inc., an independent school management consulting firm, and lives in New Jersey, where he has volunteered for his church and for the Montclair YMCA, and in Rhode Island, where he works actively for conservation causes. His wife, Linda, worked in the Academy’s first Development Office and is Vice President of Browning Associates. Their daughter, Ashley, is a social worker in Boston.

Susan graduated from Pepperdine University with a major in communications in 1987, having taken a semester off to open the Jenny Craig Company, the weightloss and lifestyle program her parents had founded, in Australia. While in college, she spent two summers managing Jenny Craig Centers in Los Angeles. Susan’s business experience is diverse. She was an intern at CNN in Washington, DC at the start of her career, and then from 1988 to 1994 worked for the Jenny Craig Company as a trainer, supervisor, and franchisee. During this time, she traveled extensively in the U.S. as well as to England and Australia in support of the business. Susan and Mark also owned and operated El Rancho Restaurant and Lodge in Evergreen, Colorado, for six years. In 2008, Susan, Mark, and Jim Brogan joined efforts to develop a motivational program for teens based in Del Mar, California. Susan now lives in Colorado with her husband and is active with Brandon’s three siblings and is looking forward to being involved with WMA, “We found WMA through a friend and love what we see! I am looking forward to bringing some of my marketing and communication experience to the plate to help spread the word on what a great school we are!”

enita McCallum Witherspoon leaves the Board of Trustees after a term characterized by thoughtfulness and generosity. She was on the Board from 2002 –

2010, chairing the Education Committee and serving on the Development Committee. A professional musician, Lenita completed the term of her late husband Robert McCallum ’46 and was then elected to a second term. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the arts and spiritual awareness. With Bob’s brother Dr. Charles A. (Scotty) McCallum Jr. ’43, she was instrumental in establishing a fund in his name supporting a visiting lecturer each year to enrich the spiritual life of students of the Academy. This effort has brought a variety of speakers to campus including: an ecumenical panel exploring the nature of spirituality from Catholic, Islamic, Judaic, Zen, and Native American perspectives; The Gospel According to the Simpsons with Mark Pinsky; the debate “Does God Exist?” between Mr. Brendan Randall of the Harvard Divinity School and Rev. Jeffrey Minkler, Parochial Vicar of St. Cecilia’s Roman Catholic Church in Wilbraham; and Officer Steve, a New York City policeman injured on duty, who explored the importance of forgiveness and nonviolence in today’s society. Lenita began each Board meeting with a reading that served to focus the minds of Trustees on the important work of steering the Academy on a successful course. Her thoughtful comments were always made with the students in mind, and her contributions were respected by her fellow Trustees. We know, as she moves on to other endeavors, that we can always count on Lenita’s support.

T

his year the Academy welcomes two new administrators, welcomes back one, and sees two more move into new positions. In addition to Robyn Boyer, our new Director of Admission, profiled with the Admission Office in the opening pages of the magazine, Don Nicholson has moved from development to become the Director of Athletics. Richard Rodgers is the new Director of Development and Tiffany Norman joins the Deans Office as Dean of Residential Life, and we welcome back Melissa Donohue to a new position, Director of Strategic Initiatives. Here’s a brief introduction; please introduce yourselves and learn more about them the next time you see them.

Director of Strategic Initiatives Ms. Melissa Donohue has returned to the Academy after spending three years pursuing her doctoral degree in education at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She serves on the administrative team as the Director of Strategic Initiatives. In this role, she leads marketing strategies for the Academy in the key areas of admission, development, college acceptance, and academic recognition. She is also the director of the Shenkman Trading Center. In that role, she develops economic and financial courses, trading center workshops, and other curricula for the trading center. Melissa is the founding director of the Center for Entrepreneurial & Global Studies, in which capacity she served from 2003-2007. In that role, she developed the original CEGS curriculum, initiated the WMA international travel program, launched the Blocks Rock! entrepreneurial program and fundraising strategy, and designed the Shenkman Trading Center.

worked at Swiss Bank Corporation and Wasserstein Perella, both in New York. She is a financial education content consultant for Thirteen, the flagship public television station of the NYC tri-state area, working with online lesson plans, essays, and teaching strategies, as well as on the television special “What’s Up in Finance?” Melissa is on the board of the Springfield chapter of Children’s International Summer Villages (CISV) and is a limited partner in Alternative Investment Analytics, LLC in Amherst. She was formerly on the board of The Grammar School in Somersville, Connecticut, and Grace Church School in Brooklyn Heights, New York.

Director of Development Mr. Richard Rodgers has joined the Academy after ten years in the Development Office at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. During that time, he served as Director of Corporate Relations in the Office of Research, Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations, and, from October 2006 onwards, as Executive Director of Development. He has a proven record in both stewardship and fundraising. At the University of Massachusetts, Rich coordinated the prospect visit calendar and travelled with the Chancellor to cultivate, solicit, and steward principal and major gift donors. He also managed a personal portfolio of high-level individual prospects and board members. He worked directly with board members, alumni leadership, and campus leadership to achieve fundraising, communications, and alumni relations objectives.

Melissa has a bachelor’s degree in government from Oberlin College and a master’s degree in international affairs with a specialization in banking and finance from Columbia University. Her doctoral work at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, includes a dissertation focused on women’s financial literacy.

Rich is a graduate of the George School, a Quaker boarding and day school in Newtown, Pennsylvania. Initially a day student, he elected to board as a junior and served as a dormitory prefect as a senior. He credits his independent school experience with expanding his horizons and preparing him for college and for adult life with rigorous academic and athletic preparation balanced with life-long friendships and community spirit. He sees a similar spirit at work in WMA.

Melissa previously worked in finance and financial journalism, most recently at Bloomberg LP in New York City. She also

Dean of Residential Life Ms. Tiffany Norman, a graduate of Peddie School, began preparing for this year as Dean of Residential Life over the summer. In that capacity, she is responsible for all aspects of boarding students’ lives, including weekend activities. She is also coordinating the student leadership program. Tiffany has taught history, math, and science in both middle school and high school. She began her career at Williamsburg Middle School Academy as a math and science teacher. In 2006, she travelled to Manja, Jordan, to become a founding faculty member of King’s Academy, where she was assistant dean of students, freshman dean, and taught history. In addition, she was the student life coordinator and residence life manager, a dorm parent, and the girls’ varsity soccer coach. Tiffany also created the King’s Academy Summer Enrichment Program for Grade 6, 7, and 8 students in Jordan, an early identification program to ensure that underprivileged students had the opportunity to apply to and attend King’s Academy. SEP is modeled on Deerfield Academy’s KIPP-STEP program. In 2009, Tiffany returned to the United States and taught history at Claremont Preparatory School for a year. She has a wide interest in athletics and has played soccer and lacrosse, and rowed crew. She and her husband, Hasan Alrefae, live in Smith Hall.

Director of Athletics Mr. Don Nicholson, a member of the Class of 1979, has been at the Academy since receiving his bachelor’s degree from Keene State College. He also has a master’s degree in history from American International College. He has taught history for more than twenty years and served as the History Department Chair for ten of those years before assuming the position of Director of Alumni & Development, in which capacity he served for seven years. He continues to teach AP European History in addition to his administrative duties. During Don’s tenure as Director of Development, both annual giving and capital giving improved dramatically, as did participation of alumni, parents, and faculty. Over those seven years, the new Athletic Center, the Shaw Track & Field Complex, the Mark R. Shenkman Trading Center,

the Campus Center, new faculty housing, tennis courts, and the Corbin Fields renovations, including Dennis W. Ferry ’76 Memorial Baseball Field, were all completed. Head of School Rodney LaBrecque appointed Don to the post of Director of Athletics last spring. In his career at the Academy, Don has coached boys’ lacrosse, soccer, and basketball, swimming, and, most recently, girls’ soccer. He is an active recruiter, traveling miles each week to soccer games throughout the area to scout local talent. Don is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and he received his National Coaching Diploma from the NSCAA in 1997. In 2001, he was selected as the NSCAA/adidas New England Coach of the Year in the Private/Parochial High School Girls category. The Girls’ Varsity Soccer teams are a perennial postseason threat. They have reached the playoffs every year since 1997. Don’s 2000 and 2001 teams won the Class C New England Championships, the 1999, 2005, and 2008 teams were league finalists. His players have continued to play at the college level at Wheaton, Vassar, St. Lawrence, Dartmouth, WPI, Randolph Macon, Connecticut College, Smith, Union, Wellesley, and others. Don’s is an Academy family. His wife Karen is one of his assistant coaches, and he is very proud that his son Kyle and daughter Nicole are both alumni, members of the Class of 2003.

EE Ford Foundation: Money in action

I

n February 2009, WMA submitted a proposal to the E.E. Ford Foundation for a $50,000 Faculty Globalization/Global Economics Professional Development Grant. The proposal was accepted and matched with a $100,000 donation from Trustee Jim LaCrosse ’50. The focus of the grant was to provide faculty the background to “create clear curricular objectives relating to the development of global leadership skills and revise their current curricula to integrate the principles of globalization/ global economics” through seminars, workshops, and hands-on field experiences. To that end, the grant funded faculty travel to three countries and the sponsorship of biology teacher Paul Ekness to attend an EsriGIS users’ conference in San Diego, California, this summer, and provided an introduction for all faculty to the Mark R. Shenkman Trading Center. GIS PREPARATION Paul Ekness traveled to San

Diego to prepare for integrating GIS mapping software into our classroom curriculum. A GIS elective is being offered this fall where students are learning important skills related to mapping and problem solving through the use of GIS. Each student has to identify a problem that can be solved using the skills acquired in the class and then begin independently implementing a solution to the problem by the end of the trimester. FACULTY TRAVEL E.E. Ford-sponsored faculty travel during the past year included sending two faculty members to India, two to South Korea, and one to China. International Student Director and Entrepreneurship teacher Gayle Hsiao traveled to Beijing and Shanghai, where she visited the World Expo. She also met with business executives in support of the expansion of her curriculum to include international entrepreneurship. English teachers Michael Dziura and Stuart Whitcomb visited Korea with a group of students because it is a country that has transitioned from “developing” to “developed” in a relatively short period of time. The group went to Hyundai and Samsung plants to explore the corporate side of economic development, and they also learned about Korean history and culture first hand. Director of the Center for Entrepreneurial & Global Studies Wally Swanson and Fine & Performing Arts Department Chair Paul Bloomfield took students on an eye-opening trip to northern India in March 2009, where they learned about social enterprise (Air Jaldi), an educational NGO (Saalam Balaak Trust), and an NGO devoted to preserving refugee culture through the selling of traditional art (Tibetan Nuns Project). FACULTY SEMINARS In addition to travel, the E.E. Ford money also funded openingof-school seminars in which WMA faculty learned about the functionality and possibility of the technology in the Shenkman Trading Center. The introduction was presented by Richard Gibble, Director of the Hughey Center for Financial Services at Bentley University, who is responsible for integrating the trading floor into Bentley’s finance curriculum at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

When I was a budding scientist, he suggested that I look into Wilbraham because besides the good math and science programs, I could take German, which was the language of science at the time. Dad was at his best when he could relax and just be himself. I loved the vacations that we had together every summer after I moved my family to the Netherlands, especially exploring countries in Europe on the alternate summer. Although he was unable to live long enough to meet his latest great-grandchildren at our recent family reunion, I was glad that he recovered enough from his near-death experience last August for me to be able to spend a week with him and tell him how much I loved him. Jim ’68 Dad shared the value of family – nurturing relationships with his five children and four great grandchildren, meeting new people, and staying in touch with friends. So many of my strengths I learned from my Dad, adaptability, curiosity, acceptance of difference, persistence, staying active/busy, interest in others (ie networking), and sports. He loved singing in any church choir, enjoying meals with friends and family, and watching sports, especially the Red Sox. Discovering family history and lots of family card playing taught us all to think strategically and anticipate others’ moves (which he wanted us to use in our professional lives). Following in Dad’s footsteps to Wilbraham & Monson Academy, gave me the chance to learn about Dad from teachers and his classmates and friends. It was fun when he visited for Trustee meetings, so I could share some of the school of “today” with him Sid & Nancy at Cornell and his fellow board members. I also attended his college alma mater, Cornell, which allowed me to continue to discover the man beyond the father. Hearing stories from Dad and his friends brought me the realization of my dad as a person, one who

WMA lost a member of the family when Richie Morgan passed Sean & Richie last Christmas away on his 89th birthday this past May 6. Richie’s love for and dedication to WMA began back in the ’60s when he was a builder. Responsible for building Chamberlin Hall, several of the campus homes and numerous renovations, Richie left his mark just about everywhere on campus. Richie went on to hold management positions at the school in the ’70s and ’80s during the most challenging times in the school’s growth. He helped to maintain the buildings and to manage the financial details during the time of the merger of Wilbraham and Monson. As important as these jobs were, they do not form Richie’s legacy. What we remember most is not what a hard worker he was, but his smile, warmth, charm, conscientiousness, and honesty. Passing his office in Rich Hall or meeting him on campus, you received the same cheerful greeting, a smile, a handshake, a “How are you?”, and, of course his wish that you “have a great day”. Richie was a genuinely nice man who always took the time to check in with you. He was never in a bad mood and always eager to remedy any situation. He was the cornerstone of the Morgan family. The Morgans have been associated with the school for four generations and counting. His mother attended in the early 1900s, his son graduated in ’69, and myself, his grandson, in ’83. It is my fond hope to have his great grandsons attend soon. He was a dedicated, passionate booster of WMA. Richie leaves his beloved wife Eva; they were married for 66 years. Richie Morgan set a wonderful example for us all that knew him. He was the best man I ever knew.

n Also notable is the class of 1955 with 24% participation raising $24,660. n Faculty: The WMA faculty had over 90% participation this year.

Things to note while looking through the Annual Report: New donors – During years such as this past one, it is increasingly evident how important it is to acquire and retain new donors. People who choose to make a gift to Wilbraham & Monson Academy are helping solidify the foundation upon which we will build our future success! Thank you very much for your support.

n Senior Giving: Congratulations to the newly elected 2010 Class Agents Emma Camilleri, Meghan Cole, Steven Marcus, Stephanie Robbins, and Hannah Tanguay.

Ten-year+ donors – Dedicated donors, such as those found on this list, are really the lifeline of the WMA Annual Fund! Each year we add more names to this growing list.

n Reunion: 100 donors in reunion classes raised $134,961 for the Annual Fund.

Young Alumni – Each year I am pleased to add a few more names to the growing list of young alumni donors who support their school. Note those young alumni who began making gifts in the spring of their senior year and have continued ever since.

n Congratulations to the Class of 1960, which had 26% participation raising $50,265 one of the largest reunion gifts in recent years. n The class of 1950 had the highest participation of any other class coming in at 27%.

Another Tremendously successful year

A

s the fiscal year came to an end, it became clear that we were going to surpass the $700,000 mark with our 2009-2010 Annual Fund effort, and that our capital fundraising would also prove to be successful. We concluded the fundraising campaign with $732,838 for the Annual Fund and $715,103 for our capital efforts. Total voluntary support for the Academy reached $1,447,941 for the fiscal year. Considering the uncertainty of the economy, we were extremely pleased with this response from all of our constituents. I cannot help but give a most heartfelt “thank you” to everyone who has helped the Academy experience another tremendously successful year. Please take some time to look over all the specific pieces of the 2009-2010 Annual Report. As you look at the charts, you can certainly get a very clear picture of how extensive the enthusiasm for WMA is among all of our donors and volunteers. Their efforts, combined with the support and vision of our Board of Trustees and our Head of School Rodney LaBrecque, are all helping to propel the Academy to even greater levels of success as The Global School®. This summer was extremely busy as several capital projects reached completion. The highlights were the addition of another faculty house, the construction of nine new tennis courts on Faculty Street, and the completion of renovations to the “Campus Center” below Lak Dining Hall. The new Campus Center will certainly prove to be very popular with our students and will allow them to enjoy a great space for all types of activities. All of these wonderful projects have added greatly to the quality of life for our students and faculty alike. I urge you to go to our Web site and take a look at the photos of these new additions. I would also like to extend my personal thanks to all of you for your support during my seven years in this position at the Academy. Don Nicholson ’79 Director of Alumni & Development

The Robert B. Enemark ’42 Science Fund: Sharing a Lifelong Love of Science with WMA Students

ob Enemark ’42 has loved talking on, playing with, taking apart, and putting together radios since he was a boy. While a student at Wilbraham Academy, Bob was encouraged by his physics professor, Mr. Harold Crean Hemond, to become interested in experimentation with electronics. He also had a radio station his senior year. Bob continues to study science and to experiment now that he is retired from a 30-year career as an inventor, entrepreneur, engineer, and project manager.

Each year, The Robert B. Enemark ’42 Science Fund provides close to $1,000 of funding for our science program. Over the last 30 years, nearly $30,000 in equipment has been purchased for our labs thanks to Bob’s generosity. Bob and his wife Ellen, who are both members of the Heritage Society, also generously support the Academy’s Annual Fund.

In 1980, Bob and his partner sold their successful smoke-alarm company to a security company. (Bob holds several patents in smoke-detection technology.) “At the time of the sale, I received stock. I decided to give some to my family and the rest to my schools: Union College and Wilbraham & Monson Academy. At For more information on starting a fund or WMA, I established a fund to help with the becoming a member of the Heritage Society, purchase of science equipment. I wanted please contact: Christina Cronin, Director to make sure today’s students had the tools of Major Gifts & Campaign Coordinator, at they needed to inspire them and foster 413.596.9189 or ccronin@WMA.us. their love of science,” said Enemark. page 16 WMA Annual Report 2008-2009
