Bathypelagic zone (midnight zone)
The bathypelagic zone is the zone that spans from 3,300 feet to 13,000 feet beneath the surface of the ocean. There is no light in this area except that of which is produced by the creatures that live there. There are no plants in this zone because there is no light for photosynthesis. Most of the creatures that live in this zone do not have eyes and are very weak. This is because the fish do not need to have eyes because even if they did, they would be useless. The fish do not have to be strong because the predators cannot see them to eat them. Many whales dive down to the bathypelagic zone to feed on the plankton and small fish that live there. The creatures that live in this zone are very energy efficient because it is extremely hard for them to find any source of energy.
The frilled shark is a fish that lives in the bathypelagic zone. The frilled shark belongs to the animalia kingdom, the chordata phylum, and the chlamydoselachus genus. The frilled shark mainly feeds on weak squid that have drifted into the bathypelagic zone. The frilled shark does not use a lot of energy, which allows it to be able to go for long periods of time in between meals. The frilled shark is considered to be a living fossil and is often mistaken for a sea serpent. The frilled shark's liver is huge and holds extremely efficient lipids that allow it to coast through the waters with little effort at all. The frilled shark is able to thrive in the bathypelagic zone because of its efficiency as an animal and the ability to go long periods of time between meals is key in the bathypelagic zone because there is no light and it is hard for the frilled shark to find sources of energy.
