Former India opener Virender Sehwag said he had once turned down a Big Bash League (BBL) offer during his playing days while adding that it would be unlikely to have Indians feature in overseas T20 leagues that do not offer lucrative packages.

During an interaction with former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist in the ‘Club Prairie Fire’ podcast, the dashing India batter was asked if he sees a time when Indian players would play in other T20 leagues.

“No! Why? No need. We are rich people, we don’t go to poor countries,” Sehwag responded in the video

“I still remember that when I retired from the Indian team, not retired but dropped and was playing IPL, I received an offer to participate in Big Bash. I said okay how much money are you offering? They said some $100,000. I replied I can spend that much money on my holidays. Even last night’s bill was more than $100,000,” he added.

“Going out for one month playing Big bash or The Hundred, where you get only that $100,000, maybe $200,000. If you talk about millions, yes then I’m interested otherwise no,” the 45-year-old Sehwag quipped.

Festive offer

Sehwag also spoke about an instance where he turned down a British media broadcaster with differences in remuneration. “Once I got a call from Sky Sports saying that ‘We’ll love to have you in in our panel.’ I said ‘You can’t afford me’. But they said, ‘No, give us your price’. I said ‘You can’t afford me but they said ‘Please give us the price’. Then I said okay ‘£10,000 a day’,” Sehwag remarked.

Sehwag is currently a part of the official broadcast team with the IPL. Sehwag’s IPL career spanned eight seasons from 2008 to 2015 where he amassed 2728 runs with two centuries and 16 fifties with a wholesome 155.44 strike rate.”
