Prime Minister Indira Gandhi called for international action to end foreign intervention in Grenada and to ensure the unity of Cyprus and appealed to the Commonwealth nations to urge the two superpowers “to exert themselves with greater determination” to break the stalemate in negotiations for complete disarmament. In her welcome address, Mrs Gandhi made a strong plea for putting an end to the arms race.
The Soviet Union’s walk-out from the Geneva talks on limiting medium-range nuclear missiles cast its shadow on the opening day of the Commonwealth conference as heads of government began discussing how they should promote the East-West dialogue to reduce the arms race. The news came towards the end of the session.
A compromise on the extreme positions taken by some of the industrialised and developing countries over international economic reform is likely to emerge at the Commonwealth meeting in spite of differences in perceptions seen in the initial speeches of two prime ministers, Mrs Gandhi and Mrs Thatcher.
Dhirendra Brahmachari filed an application in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court under Sec 497 of the CrPC seeking anticipatory bail for himself. He is an accused in a case under the Indian Arms Act registered in the Gandhinagar police station following a raid on the Shiva gun factory on November 18. The anticipatory bail application was moved by two Supreme Court advocates who came to file a writ petition challenging the raid on Brahmachari’s gun manufacturing unit.
