With New Year just round the corner, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi stepped into the kitchen to prepare orange marmalade. The video of the mother-son duo picking fresh fruit from the kitchen garden and preparing the dish has been shared on Rahul Gandhi’s YouTube account on New Year’s Eve.

In the video, the senior Congress leader can be heard saying “if BJP wants to get the jam, they can get it too”. In reply, Sonia Gandhi quips that the BJP will throw it at them. “That’s good, then we can pick it up again,” Rahul Gandhi responds.

The mother-son duo is seen cleaning the oranges, removing the leaves and chopping them in the video. While stirring the pulp, Rahul also states that it is his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s recipe and his mother’s favourite jam.

Mentioning about the politics of food towards the end of the video, Rahul Gandhi says, “A huge amount of political fight has been about food. Gandhiji had a particular vision about food. Vegetarian, goat milk and he had a set of nutritional ideas. I also have a set of nutritional ideas slightly different than Gandhiji’s.”

In the video, Sonia Gandhi talks about how she adjusted with Indian food. “When an Indian person goes abroad. I’m not talking about today because there are Indian restaurants everywhere, you cannot adjust to the foods in the UK or elsewhere. Similarly, when I came here, it took me time to adjust to the Indian flavours, especially the chillies,” she says.

Festive offer

Rahul Gandhi chimes in saying it took her time to adjust. Earlier she did not like green coriander but now she has changed, Rahul adds. Sonia Gandhi says, “It took me a little time but now I love it. And when I go abroad, the first thing I want to have is ‘arhar ki daal‘ and rice.”

Rahul Gandhi mentions that Sonia Gandhi’s mother was the best cook in the house. Later, Sonia learned to cook Indian dishes from Kashmiri relatives, he adds.

On a lighter note, replying to the question “What’s the one thing that annoys you about Rahul?” Sonia says, “He’s stubborn, as a I am.” Sonia Gandhi also adds he is very affectionate and takes care of her and Priyanka well when she is unwell.

“Marmalade is a fruit preserve made from the juice and peel of citrus fruits boiled with sugar and water. The well-known version is made from bitter orange,” the text in the video says.
