The ruling Trinamool Congress on September 2 celebrated ‘Singur Divas’ across the state. Several party MLAs also gathered inside West Bengal Assembly premises and paid tributes to the martyrs of the anti-land acquisition movement.

“Several MLAs were present in the Assembly today and paid tributes to the martyrs of the anti-land acquisition movement. It is a historic day. We pay our respects to the brave people of Singur who stood up against an autocratic regime,” State Parliamentary Affairs minister Partha Chatterjee said.

Mamata Banerjee’s struggle has shown the path to the entire country. The way Jallianwalabagh massacre has found its place in the pages of history, the Singur movement will also find its place in the history,” Chatterjee said.

Elsewhere in the state TMC members and supporters celebrated ‘Singur Divas’ by raising slogans in support of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Banerjee had announced that ‘Singur Diwas’ would be observed in every block, panchayat, municipality and ward on September 2, 2016.

Festive offer

Senior Congress leader and MLA Manas Bhunia, currently having a strained relationship with the party’s state leadership, also took part in the celebrations in the Assembly.

“I have the opportunity to take part in the celebrations. I would like to mention that for Congress, TMC is a much better option than CPI(M). CPI(M) and Congress can never be friends as both have great ideological differences. TMC is close to Congress ideologically,” Bhunia said.
