In a recent conversation with GQ, Nayanthara emphasised the importance of portraying empowered women in her films. “Portraying empowered women who choose to defy social stigmas is not just a creative choice, but also a personal commitment to amplifying voices that are often overlooked or silenced,” she said.
In recent years, Nayanthara has also transitioned from starring in commercial projects to backing and working in films with a social message. In 2017, she played a district collector in Aramm, followed by a crime comedy centred around her in 2018’s Kolamaavu Kokila, and a cop in Imaikkaa Nodigal the same year. Her most recent film, Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food, saw her play an aspiring chef, while her upcoming films, Test and Mannangatti Since 1960, will further showcase her commitment to socially relevant narratives.
Nayanthara’s dedication to empowering women extends beyond the silver screen. She recently launched a new skincare line called 9Skin with her husband, Vignesh Shivan. In the same interview, Nayanthara explained that her brand is “less about aesthetics and more about skin nourishment.” This venture not only expands her entrepreneurial pursuits but also serves as an extension of her personal commitment to empowering women through self-care and personal empowerment.
Alongside Vignesh, Nayanthara formed the banner Rowdy Pictures to back Tamil projects like Netrikann and Koozhangal, as well as the Gujarati film Shubh Yatra in 2013. By supporting a diverse range of stories and filmmakers, Nayanthara is giving voice to the voiceless.
