Kolkata police launch probe after CM Mamata Banerjee suffers head injury, security heightened at CM’s residence

CM Banerjee reportedly hit her head against a glass showcase after the fall that left a deep cut on the forehead and the 69-year-old was rushed to the state-run SSKM Hospital. The Trinamool Congress supremo was later discharged from hospital after applying four stitches on her head, officials said.

According to reports, shortly before the accident, CM Banerjee had attended an event to inaugurate a statue of former minister Subrata Mukherjee at Gariahat at Ekdalia Evergreen Club.

“She was with her nephew Abhishek Banerjee, sister-in-law Kajari Banerjee and other relatives at the time of the incident. She was walking in her drawing room and suddenly her foot slipped. She fell down and hit her head against a glass showcase. She had a deep cut on her forehead and started bleeding,” said a TMC leader.

SSKM Hospitak director Dr Manimoy Bandopadhyay said, “Chief Minister of West Bengal reported to our hospital today around 07.30 pm with a history of fall within the vicinity of her home due to some push from behind. She had a cerebral concussion and had a sharp cut over her forehead and nose which was bleeding profusely. Three stitches were applied on the forehead and one on the nose and the required dressing was done. Investigations like ECG, CT scan, etc were done”.

The doctor said that though CM Banerjee was advised to remain admitted for observation, she preferred to go home.

She will continue to be under close watch and will continue to have the treatment as per the advice of the team of doctors. She will again be assessed tomorrow and subsequent treatment will be decided accordingly…”

Sources said that the CM had to undergo a few medical tests including an MRI and a CT-scan. A senior doctor at SSKM hospital said, “She fell down but we had to check if the fall was due to a health problem like fluctuation in blood pressure or if she had a mild stroke. However, she is stable now.”
