Inception of DMRC to execute and operate Delhi Metro

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) was established on May 3, 1995, to plan, execute and operate the Delhi Metro network. The company is an equal partnership between the central government and the Delhi government.

Delhi Metro: Length, number of stations

As of September 19, 2023, the Delhi Metro has a constructed network of 393 km. There are 288 metro stations across various lines of the Delhi Metro.

 

Delhi Metro development phases

The development work of the Delhi Metro network was divided into four phases:

  • Phase-I: completed in 2006
  • Phase-II: completed in 2011
  • Phase-III: completed in 2020
  • Phase-IV: work started on December 30, 2019

 

Delhi Metro: Opening of 1st corridor

The first corridor of the Delhi Metro opened on the Red Line between Shahdara and Tis Hazari on December 25, 2002.

News update

Red Line may extend till Haryana’s Kundli

June 11, 2023: The DMRC plans to extend the Rithala-Narela corridor of the Delhi Metro up to Kundli in Haryana to provide additional connectivity to the neighbouring state. The the 27.319-km corridor comprising 22 stations. is being planned as an extension of the presently operational Shaheed Sthal-Rithala Red Line corridor.  This will be the Delhi Metro’s fourth expansion into Haryana after Yellow Line, Violet Line and Green Line. Also, this may be Delhi Metro’s first corridor to connect Haryana and Uttar Pradesh via Delhi.

News update: Delhi Airport Express Line train speed is 110 kmph

June 23, 2023: The operational speed of the metro trains on the 23-km Airport Express Line has now been increased from 100 (kilo metre per hour) kmph to 110 kmph from June 22. With the increase in the speed, passengers can now reach from New Delhi to Airport Terminal-3 in 16 minutes. The total travel time from New Delhi to Dwarka Sector-21 Metro station after the current increase will be around 20 minutes.

Delhi Metro: Interesting facts

Delhi Metro Brown Line

Under Phase-IV, the DMRC plans launch of the Brown Line.  The Delhi Metro Brown Line will act as a connectivity hub for existing metro lines in South Delhi, joining the three metro lines, Pink Line, Magenta Line and Violet Line. The less-than-8-km line will begin from Lajpat Nagar and end at Saket G Block, running through a total of eight metro stations.

Delhi Metro services to start at 5 AM on Aug 15

August 14, 2023: To facilitate the passengers to attend the Independence Day ceremony on August 15, 2023, (Tuesday), the Delhi Metro train services on all lines will start from 5 AM from all terminal stations. The trains will run with a frequency of 30 minutes on all lines till 6 AM. After 6 AM, metro trains will run as per the normal timetable throughout the day. However, parking facilities will not be at the Delhi Metro stations from 6 AM on August 14 till 2 PM on August 15 in view of the security measures adopted on the occasion. However, the Metro train services will continue to run as per normal schedule.

DMRC extends UPI payment facility across network

August 3, 2023: The Delhi Metro on August 3 extended the option of payment by Unified Payments Interface (UPI) at its ticket vending machines (TVMs) and ticket/customer care counters across the network. “With the upgrade of machines at its stations across the Delhi-NCR network, passengers can now make payments to recharge smart cards/purchase metro QR tickets using UPI–supported mobile applications through smart phones as is done nowadays in every walk of life, be it at shopping malls, grocery store, vegetable vendor, etc. The option eliminates the need to carry cash or debit/credit cards and thereby reducing the load on their wallets,” the DMRC said in a statement. ­­­­ The DMRC was the first metro system in the country to initially start this UPI facility on select TVMs on Noida and Ghaziabad section in 2018.

DMRC starts anti-encroachment drive at Lal Quila, Chandni Chowk metro stations

June 13, 2023: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on June 12 started an encroachment removal drive at Lal Quila and Chandni Chowk metro stations in the national capital. The move would ensure hassle-free access for metro commuters while entering/exiting, it said in an official statement. While informing that the special encroachment removal drive was being conducted at gate number I and 2 at the Lal Quila Metro station, and gate number 5 at the Chandni Chowk Metro Stations on a daily basis up to June 17, the DMRC added that such special drives would also be undertaken for passenger convenience at other metro stations in the days to come.

 

Cabinet gives nod to HUDA City Centre-Cyber City Metro Line in Gurgaon

June 8, 2023: The Union Cabinet on June 7 approved metro connectivity from HUDA City Centre to Cyber City in Gurgaon, and another 1.5-km spur line to connect the Dwarka Expressway.   Covering a distance of 28.50 kilometre (km), the new line will have 27 stations. Gurgaon is already connected with national capital through the Delhi Metro’s 49.019-km Yellow Line.  However, only a 7.05-km route falls in Gurgaon with five stations, including Guru Dronacharya, Sikandarpur, MG Road and IFFCO Chowk.  The HUDA City Center Metro Station is currently the last station on this route.
