Japan’s internet cafes offer far more than just PC time. Showers, free drinks, and a comfortable mattress truly make them hotels in disguise.
Japan’s internet cafes are truly something to behold. During my stay at Comic Buster, a popular internet cafe franchise in Japan, I was impressed by the accommodation packages and private rooms they had on offer.
For just 2700 JPY (< 20 USD), I opted for the 10-hour overnight package which included a private room with a comfortable leather mattress and a PC.
Given my busy schedule for the next morning, my stay at Comic Buster internet cafe was purely for the purpose of a cheap night’s accommodation.
A library of comics and magazines
Upon gaining access to the internet cafe, I was surprised at how much more it resembled a library.
The place was packed with bookshelves featuring Japanese manga comics, magazines, and non-fiction novels.
So quiet you could hear a pin drop, the vibe was peaceful and the atmosphere was tranquil.
In what is expected to be a noisy place full of PC gamers, Japan’s internet cafes break the stereotype with their incredibly accommodating setup.
A private room to yourself
When I saw my private room, I immediately understood why Japan’s internet cafes are so peaceful.
Instead of having the PCs lined up in an open area like those outside of Japan, these computers are enclosed between four noise-canceling walls.
Indeed, the place was quiet not because it was empty, but because all the PC users had a room to themselves.
While I wasn’t too interested in the games they had on display, I loved the free space available to spread my luggage (and myself).
It was also handy to make use of the available charging ports in the room to prepare for the next day’s travels.
Despite not having a blanket or pillow for myself, I had a surprisingly good sleep on the comfortable mattress alone.
Showers and other amenities
Before going to sleep, I was in dire need of a shower after a full day of cycling.
Fortunately, Comic Buster provides its guests with free one-time use of the shower facility before incurring additional fees.
Other amenities include free water, tea, and coffee machines as well as access to a paid food and drink menu.
Of course, there is also a public toilet which, unlike the shower, can be used for free as many times as you like.
All things considered, Japanese internet cafes may not be the same as a 5-star hotel, but you certainly get your money’s worth.
I would highly recommend staying the night at a local Comic Buster in emergency situations or if you’re seeking the cheapest possible accommodation option.
