How to reach Havelock Island?

  • From Port Blair, you have to take a ferry to reach Havelock Island. Private ferries are usually cleaner and will take you to your destination faster than the government ones. Well, let us tell you then. The best time to plan your Havelock Island trip is between October and April. During these months, the weather remains considerably pleasant, making it ideal for water sports and beach activities. How many days are needed to engulf this beauty?

Ideally, 3 days and 2 nights are needed to cover Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep). But we would recommend you to include one more day to completely soak in the vibes of the island.

It usually takes about half a day to reach Havelock Island in the ferries from Port Blair or Neil Island. So, anything lesser that 2 nights is not at all recommended.

How to move around in Havelock Island?

Four-wheelers, autos and tuk-tuks are available for hire just outside the jetty and other locations throughout Havelock. You can also take a two-wheeler on rent for exploring the entire Havelock Island.

There are petrol pumps available in the island, so getting petrol won’t be an issue. Renting one without gear two-wheeler will usually charge Rs 700 per day.

Radhanagar Beach

Adjectives fall short to describe this beauty in words. With the waves falling on stretches of white sand, the place is simply breath-taking. It is a 2-kilometre-long crescent-shaped beach with soft silvery sand. Back in 2004 this beach had been voted by by the the “Times Magazine” as the best beach in Asia.

There is not a speck of dirt on the beach. You can spend hours by just gazing at the endless blue sea along with the white sands and the green trees adjacent to the beach. And the view of the sunset from the beach is one of the most ecstatic views.

Public buses are available from the Main Jetty to reach Radhanagar Beach. Or else, you can also hire an auto-rickshaw always.

Water sports are not allowed at Radhanagar Beach.

The sunset from Radhanagar beach is spectacular. You can’t miss it in any manner. The beach remains crowded with tourists during the afternoon and evening time, so you won’t feel alone.

A tip: If you have time, do visit Radhanagar Beach in the morning. At that time the beach is comparatively less crowded.

Vijaynagar Beach

Vijaynagar Beach is another such beautiful beach near the Vijayanagar village on the east coast of the island and is lined by Mahua and coconut trees. You can go on long walks along the beach, and what’s better than having a company on your long walks. A number of mid-ranged to luxury resorts are found around this place. The Dolphin Resort is right in front of Vijaynagar Beach.

Kalapathar Beach

If you are looking for little bit of solace then Radhanagar beach is your place. If Radhanagar Beach is apt for sunsets, then Kalapathar Beach is definitely apt for the sunrise. Radhanagar beach is 3 km from Vijaynagar Beach and is on the extreme end of Havelock Island. The beach got its name from the stretches of black rock along the beach. The beach is secluded and not many people visits the beach.

The ride to Kalapathar beach is one hell of a lovely ride through the Kalapathar village having paddy fields and small huts.

Elephant Beach

Elephant Beach is another beautiful and extremely popular beach of Havelock Island and can be reached by cruise sailing through azure blue seas. Speedboats are available from jetty near Beach No. 1 for Elephant Island. The Elephant Beach looks even more beautiful with the trees at the backdrop. There are some large broken branches from uprooted trees that make the beach photographic.

Elephant Beach is the next most popular beach after Radhanagar Beach, so don’t expect solitude. It is also a famous spot for water activities. It has very beautiful coral reefs and snorkelling. Scuba diving and sea walking are also done here.

The beach is named after an elephant who used to swim in the waters along with his mahout and entertain the tourists. Thankfully, it has stopped now. So do not expect any elephants to entertain you while you enjoy your fresh coconut water. The beach has locker facilities and changing rooms too for the tourists.

What to do in Havelock Island

Scuba Diving at Havelock Island is a must

If you go back from Havelock Island with Scuba Diving, then that my friend, will be the biggest mistake to do. And it’s not only the sport, but it is also about finding yourself in the depths of ocean. The ideal season for diving is between December to May. Seduction Point, Mac point, Minerva Ledge, Turtle Bay, Pilot Reef etc are some of the best diving sites in Havelock Island. There are a few popular dive shops like Barefoot Scuba, Andaman Dive Club and a few more.

Snorkelling
