The third Sikh Guru, Guru Amar Das Ji, was born on the 14th of Vaishakh Shukla in 1479 in the village of Basar in Amritsar. His father's name was Tejbhan and mother's name was Lakhmiji. Guru Amar Das Ji was a person of great spiritual instinct. He used to do Simran named Hari even after being busy in farming and business work throughout the day. People used to call him lovingly devotee Amar Das Ji.

Once he heard from his daughter-in-law a 'word' composed by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Devji. Hearing that word, the devotee Amar Das was so impressed that immediately after asking the address of Guru Angad Devji to the daughter-in-law, he came to him. At the age of 61, he accepted Guru Angad Devji, who was 25 years younger than him and seemed to be in a relationship, and served the Guru with unanimous gesture for 11 consecutive years. Angad Devji, the second Guru of the Sikhs, seeing the service and dedication of the devotee Amardas and considering him worthy in all respects, handed him the 'Guru Gaddi'.

Thus the devotee Amardas became the third Guru of the Sikhs. Medieval Indian society being a 'feudalistic society' suffered from many social evils. Many social evils like caste-system, high-low, female-killing, sati-practice were prevalent in the society. These evils stood as an obstacle in the healthy development of society. At such a difficult time, Guru Amar Das launched a massive movement against these social evils and motivated people to remain high and low and free from discrimination.
