Presumed portrait of Maharana Udai Singh II of Mewar smoking the huqqa, North India, Rajasthan, Mewar, 19th century Gouache and gold on paper depicting a man seated cross-legged on a carpet placed on a terrace bordered by flowerbeds and a fountain. Leaning against two cushions, he is smoking a huqqa placed before him. He is wearing an orange turban with golden braid, gold-plated elements and an egret, and is dressed in a white jama covering striped pants. On either side of the raja, recognizable by his moustache and his stoutness, two servants bring him food and fan him with a chauri. Page size : 51,4 x 42,7 cm ; painting size : 46 x 37,5 cm Udai Singh II was Maharana of Mewar from 1540 to 1572. He was the founder of the capital of Udaipur built between 1559 and 1562 to replace the old capital of Chittor which was at that time weakened by civil war and the target of the Afghan Suri dynasty.
