Composition

Is about the arrangement of all of things within the page. Composition includes the space around the figure as well as the way light and dark tones are arranged. Below are some basic things to consider.

Composition Exercise

Set up nine boxes for each direction (center, side, bottom and top). Make the first three of each set all have some space around them, the second three all touching the edges of the page, and the third three all cropped. Keep your drawings loose to start. The possibilities are endless. When you’re done, think about how you feel about each one and how the composition affects that feeling. Below are examples. This an exercise, playing around and learning how things feel, not meant to be examples of “good” compositions.
