APAAR Card: Government’s Ambitious ‘One Nation One ID’ Project for Every School Student – A Comprehensive Overview

The government is in the process of implementing a ‘One Nation One ID’ system for all students, whether they attend government or private schools. This unique identifier will be known as the ‘Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry’ (APAAR) ID. Similar to how all citizens in India possess a unique identity number through their Aadhaar Card, which serves as a crucial form of identification, the government is now working towards assigning a distinctive identification number to students from both government and private schools. This identity will be recognized as the ‘Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry’ (APAAR) ID, and it is part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Let’s delve into what the APAAR ID entails, how it will make a difference, and how the system will function.

Understanding the APAAR ID:
The Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) ID is a unique identification number designed for all school students in India. It’s essential to note that this unique identity number will not replace the existing Aadhaar ID that every student possesses; rather, it complements it. The APAAR ID is intended for all students, starting from pre-primary education and extending throughout their academic journey, including higher education. This lifelong ID number will serve as a tracking system for students’ academic progress and accomplishments.

Seeking Parental Consent:
The government has directed educational institutions to engage with the parents of students and seek their consent for the issuance of this new identity number. The unique identification number is being introduced as part of the ‘One Nation, One Student’ Scheme initiated by the Union Government. According to TG Sitharaman, Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), “APAAR and the National Credit Framework will be the QR Code for learners across India. Every skill they acquire will be credited here.”

Schools to Organize Parent-Teacher Meetings:
As reported by The Times of India, educational institutions have been instructed by state education departments to arrange meetings involving teachers and parents between October 16 and 18. These meetings will aim to explain the significance of creating an APAAR ID for students. Teachers have also been tasked with updating students’ blood group, height, and weight, as the data on the Aadhaar ID will form the basis of the APAAR ID. The government assures that student data will remain confidential and will only be shared with government agencies when necessary. Parents who initially consent to their child’s APAAR ID can also withdraw that consent at any time.
