2 students drown during trekking camp near the Shivanasamudra Falls
Two students of a reputed management college in Yelahanka drowned during their trekking camp in Kollegala rural police limits on Friday. The two, along with 43 other students, had left for the three-day trekking camp on Friday morning. The police have registered a case of unnatural death and have ruled out any foul play. However, the family members who had come to collect the bodies alleged that the management should have been careful and warned the students about the danger zones. However, no such negligence was found, according to the other students who witnessed the drowning, said an officer part of the investigations.

The two students of Bishop Cotton Academy of Professional Management at Yelahanka, identified as Devaraj, 21, of Nagenahalli near Hebbal and Srinivas, 20, of Veerasagara in Yelahanka drowned in the Cauvery on Friday afternoon at around 2.30 pm. The two victims and another student, Madhavan, were reportedly swimming under the Kaveri bridge on NH 209 near Shivanasamudra falls which is situated near Shivanasamudra Hydro Electrical Power Station.

“The two deceased along with Madhavan were unable to swim even though the water was less. As the three were lying unconscious inside the water, they were fished out with the help of a local fisherman using a coracle. Devaraj and Srinivas were declared brought dead to hospital while Madhavan has recovered. The post-mortem was conducted at the Kollegala government hospital and the bodies were handed over to the parents in the night,” said the Kollegala rural police who have registered a case.

Devaraj’s friend Hari Prasad, who is a former secretary of Bangalore South district committee of Students Federation of India, alleged negligence on part of the management. “Devaraj’s family was unaware of the three-day trekking camp. Even though consent from parents is a must before sending children on such trips, Devaraj’s parents have not signed any such consent form. The parents of the two deceased are contemplating filing a case of negligence against the college with the Hebbal police,” Prasad added.

The management visited the family of the deceased on Saturday and condoled the deaths. Some friends of the deceased claimed that their family members were not aware of the trip and have raised allegations of negligence on part of the college. A faculty member, however, said that all mandatory procedures had been followed before the trip.
