On the shipping of azolla
Due to increasing requests for azolla i decided to try shipping them via LBC, my cargo hauler for the past few years that i deliver forage cuttings. I put them inside a food canister but for safety the staff asked me to put them inside a styrofore.
The destination will be to the island province of Catanduanes. I will take care of the proper packing next week. It was a Sunday when I went to Naga City and I don’t have enough time to look for a styrofore.
If this goes well i will accomodate other requests within the country. From the reader’s comments i get demands from as far as Malaysia. Azolla is a water fern and I really don’t think it can stand the stress of hauling for more than a couple of days.

Hope you can send me a pack. I’m willing to pay for the freight and handling. Thank you, Ven.

Hi Sigrid, I will see first how it will weather the shipping condition to Catanduanes. Since it has to be tightly packed i am thinking of packing it in the canister just like in the photo, but with a little amount of water, and observe how it will survive at least 3 days packed in little water and minimal amount of air.

Hi Sigrid, What i did was seal azolla tightly in a food canister, with little water and set aside in a corner for three days. There was a bit of air inside and on the first day it went well. But then i decided to put them inside the truck, to mimic the closed and hot condition during transport. That’s when the azolla wilted.
I am thinking of repeating another observation but this time limit the amount of azolla. After all i got my first duckweeds transported from Manila down here on a tiny cellophane wrapper and numbering less than twenty “little leaves”. With care i was able to propagate them. Usually duckweeds can be found growing alongside azolla.

Hi M,
I used a Lock and Lock food canister, with very little amount of water, just to keep the fern moist. Around my country, it only took a couple of days, and i presumed it went fine because i had no complains coming my way.
