Addison was a student at Queen's and Fellow of Magdalen. A Member of Parliament from 1708–1719, and Secretary of State from 1717. With Richard Steele he published 'The Spectator' from 1711 to 1714. This portrait, painted after Addison's death, is probably based on Kneller's portrait in the National Portrait Gallery but extended with references to his activities: a letter to Mr Spectator, signed by the artist Du Pan. Du Pan was a Swiss painter who worked in England from 1743 to 1751.
