Description:

Allspice, also called Jamaican pepper, myrtle pepper, pimento, pimenta, English pepper or newspice, are the dried unripe fruits (the "berries" or "grains" of the Pimenta dioica plant used as a spice), a semi-canopy tree, native to the Greater Antilles, southern Mexico and Central America and now cultivated in many other warm regions of the world. The fruits are harvested when they are green and unripe and are traditionally dried in the sun. When dry, they are brown and look like large brown smooth peppercorns. It was named allspice because it combines flavors and aromas of many different spices, namely clove, nutmeg and cinnamon.

The allspice, is mainly associated with the cuisines of the Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa, where it is usually combined with other spices. It's also used in English and Scandinavian cuisines.

This fragrant spice has a place in both sweet and savory dishes. It goes well with meats, especially lamb and beef, in sauces, in rich meat soups, in marinades, in pilaf and in sweets. It also goes well with most "hot" spices, such as cumin, cinnamon, cloves, paprika and nutmeg.
