Small shrub to 1 m (3 ft) tall. Leaves or their lobes distinctly long-filiform, tomentose to glabrate. Inflorescence of numerous small heads in leafy panicles, involucre pubescent, outer florets pistillate, inner florets staminate. Fruits very small achenes.
Distribution: Western Great Plains and Great Basin.
Habitat: Open sandy areas. In Oklahoma the species is a major component of the Sand Sage Grassland of the northwestern part of the state.
Comment: The crushed foliage and stems have the characteristic odor of sagebrush.
NWI status: none
Comment: Artemisia was the wife of King Mausolus of Caria; filifolia refers to the long narrow leaves.
