Rava Pongal / How to make Rava (semolina pongal) / Thai Pongal recipe

Rava Pongal is very easy, simple and takes minutes to prepare. Rava Pongal / Semolina Pongal is served as a breakfast in all south Indian families. It goes out well with chutney and sambar. We are going to prepare the spicy version of the rava Pongal.

ngredients:

  • Rava / Semolina / Sooji – 1 cup
  • Split Green Gram / Moong dal – ½ cup
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Black peppercorns – 1 tsp
  • Ginger – 1 no (½ inch stick)
  • Curry leaves – a sprig
  • Cashew nuts – 7 nos (broken)
  • Salt – ½ tsp or to taste
  • Ghee / Clarified butter – 1 ½ tbsp.

Preparation:

  • Heat a tsp of ghee/clarified butter in vessel, add the rava/semolina/sooji and roast until it starts turning golden brown in color.
  • Remove it from fire, spread it over a plate and wait until it reaches room temperature.
  • Heat a tsp of ghee/clarified butter in the same vessel, add the split green gram/moong dal and roast until it starts turning golden brown in color.
  • Remove it from fire, spread it over a plate.
  • Heat a tbsp. of ghee/clarified butter in the same vessel, add the cumin seeds, mustard seeds, cashew nuts, ginger and curry leaves and wait until they crackle.
  • Add the roasted split green gram, add a cup of water, cover and cook until the split green gram is cooked well (mashing consistency).
  • Add the roasted rava/semolina, and 2 cups of water, sprinkle salt, cook until the whole water evaporates.
  • Drizzle a tsp of ghee/clarified butter along the sides of the Pongal and remove it from fire.

Serve hot with Sambar and Chutney.
