Who are the Akan?
The Akan people make up approximately 49.3% (2010, page 79) of the population of the Ghana with about 11.5 million people there, There are about 20 million people in all though. The other 8.5 million people are located around the same area in the Ivory Coast, generally in the western part of Africa. (Akan People, 2014) Of the Akan there are many, many subgroups, a few examples like the Abbe, Wassa, Attie, and the Anyi. (Akan subgroups and ethnic identity, 2014) The language that is widely spoken is called Twi, a welcoming phrase would look something like this, "akɔaba, ɛte sɛn," which means, "welcome, how are you?" (Akan Language, 2014) Clothing you could see them wear varies. Lots of people, more men than women, wear western clothing just like us. Otherwise women wear brightly colored robes with different patterns, they also where a large, matching head dress which sort of looks like a towel. Men wear western clothing for the most part, but some, where robes that wrap around their body. Girls wear dresses, not really long ones though and boys wear, just like men, western clothing as in shorts and tee shirts. (People, 2014) |
