Bryson, Arcadia, Calif. Filed Dec. 31, 1959, Ser. No. 476 4 Claims. (Cl. 119-1) This invention relates to a cats claw filing post in which the cat, as it claws a fabric sleeve on the post, will cause the sleeve to move and abrade the claws of the cat against an inner rough or sandpaper surface.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel cats claw filing post in which the outer fabric sleeve is movable relative to an inner sandpaper or filing coating on the post, so that the cats claws will move over the abrasive coating as the outer fabric sleeve is pulled downwardly by the clawing action of the cat.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a novel cats claw filing post of the character stated, in which the outer fabric sleeve is resiliently mounted on the post and will return to its normal position after being pulled downwardly by the clawing action of the cat.
Still another object is to provide a novel cats claw filing post which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and effective in use.
Other objects, advantages and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description and the appended claims.

FIGURE 2 is a top plan view of the same taken from the line 22 of FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-6 of FIGURE 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a base which supports the claw filing post. A post 2, which may be tubular or cylindrical in form, is fixedly mounted in the base 1 and rises vertically above that base. The post is rigidly attached to the base 1 by means of nails, suitable adhesive, or it may be integrally formed if desired. If the post 2 is tubular in form a cap 8 may be used to inclose the upper end of the post. A sandpaper or abrasive cylinder 4 surrounds the post 2 and is preferably fixedly secured to the outer surface of the post. The abrasive cylinder 4 may be sandpaper or of abrasive sheet material, or the outer surface of the post may have an abrasive substance sprayed upon its outer surface to form a filing surface for the cats claws, as will be subsequently described. A fabric sleeve 5 surrounds the post 2 and extends substantially the entire length of this post. The sleeve is formed of a suitable fabric, such as carpeting, and this sleeve is so mounted that it will slide longitudinally along the post 2 and relative to the abrasive cylinder 4. The eat, when it sinks its claws through the carpeting which forms the sleeve 5, will cause the ends of its claws to engage the abrasive cylinder 4, then as the cat pulls downwardly in its clawing action its claws will be filed on the abrasive surface of the cylinder 4.
To return the sleeve 5 to its normal raised position, I provide elastic bands 6 which are attached at one end to the upper part of the sleeve 5 and which extend over the top of the post 2, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. Thus when the cat claws the sleeve 5 downwardly the elastic band 6 will raise that sleeve to its normal position after Patented Aug. 22, 1961 ice the cat leaves the post. The lower end of the fabric sleeve 5 is also elastically attached to the base v1 by means of a rubber ring 7, one end of which is attached to the sleeve 5 and the other end is secured under metal clips or a ring 8 which is secured to the top of the base 1. The metal ring 8 may be secured to the base 1 by means of suitable screws or the like.
In operation-the cat will sink its claws through the sleeve 5 and this sleeve, being made of fabric (such as a carpet), will permit the claws to pass entirely through the sleeve. The ends of the claws then engage the abrasive cylinder 4 and, as the cat pulls downwardly in a clawing action, its claws will be filed by the abrasive surface of the cylinder 4. When the cat releases the sleeve 5 it will return to its normal raised position on the post 2 by the action of the elastic bands 6. The lower end of the sleeve 5 is also elastically attached to the base 1 by the rubber or elastic ring 7 which is attached to the lower end of the sleeve and prevents the sleeve from being pulled upwardly relative to the post 2.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A cats claw filing post comprising a base, a post extending vertically from said base, an abrasive means on the outer surface of said post, and a sleeve surrounding said post and extending substantially the length of the post, and elastic means engaging the upper end of said sleeve and urging said sleeve upwardly on the post to a normal raised position of the sleeve on the post.
2. A cats claw filing post comprising a base, a post extending vertically from said base, an abrasive means on the outer surface of said post, and a sleeve surrounding said post and extending substantially the length of the post, and elastic means engaging the upper end of said sleeve and urging said sleeve upwardly on the post to a normal raised position of the sleeve on the post, and a second elastic means engaging the lower end of said sleeve to yieldably hold the lower end of the sleeve adjacent to the base.
3. A cats claw filing post comprising a base, a cylindrical post extending vertically from the base, an abrasive cylinder on the outer surface of said post and extending substantially the length thereof, a fabric sleeve arranged on the outside of the abrasive cylinder and extending substantially the length of the post said, sleeve being movable vertically relative to the abrasive cylinder on the post, and an elastic band engaging the upper end of said sleeve and urging the sleeve to a normal raised position on the post.
4. A cats claw filing post comprising a base, a cylindrical post extending vertically from the base, an abrasive cylinder on the outer surface of said post and extending substantially the length thereof, a fabric sleeve arranged on the outside of the abrasive cylinder and extending substantially the length of the post, said sleeve being movable vertically relative to the abrasive cylinder on the post, and an elastic band engaging the upper end of said sleeve and urging the sleeve to a normal raised position on the post, and a second elastic means engaging the lower end of the sleeve and yieldably holding the sleeve against the base.
