SAFETY-RAZOR.
5pcciflcatioxroi Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. s, 1918.
Application filed June 5, 1917. Serial No. 172,909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUcUs'rUs HAGER BRYANT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Glen Ridge, inthe. county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Razor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to razors and particularly to an improved construction of safety razor wherein a minimum number of parts are used and yet the usual effect is produced.
Another object of the invention is to provide a safety razor structure whi'ch utilizes a plastic material, as for instance, celluloid, in all the parts exceptingthe blade.
Another object in view is to provide a structure in which a wedge holds the blade in position.
Astill further object in view -is the provision of a safety :razor formed with a notch in the rear edge thereof coacting with a wedge-shaped projection.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a safety razor embodying, the invention.
Fig. 2 is a section through Fig. 1 on line 2- 2.
Fig. 3 is a view of the razor shown in Fig. 1 with the parts slightly separated for illus' trating more clearly their construction an the way they are assembled.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view-oithe holder.
Referring to the accom'panyini drawin by numerals, 1 indicates a ban e forme in. any suitable-shape, and preferably provided with a threaded extension 2 of the holder 3. The holder 3 is made'with side members 4 and 5 having overhanging hook members 6 and 7, said overhanging hook resilient to an ap reciable extent and meeting with a wedge 8 or holdin the blade in the holder 3. The blade 9 is provided with a cutting edge 10, proand 12 adapted to rest against the edges of the members 4 and 5, and a notch 13 preferably slightly larger than the notch 14 in "the holder 3., The wedge 8 is provided with a projectign or lug 15, preferably of the same size and she e "as notch into sai notch when the wedge is inpo'sition and to limit the movement of the wedge toward the edge 10 0f the blade 9. Ordinarily the lug 15 is not moved down to the bottom of the notch 14 as the clamping action of the wedge" is suflicient before it reaches this position', though in case of an extra heavy ressure, accidentally'or ug will limit the movement of the .wedge so that the lower edge of the wedge will not cover or substantially cover the edge 11 of the blade 9. p
The holder 3 is provided with guarding fingers 16 which are formed with rounded ends 17 positioned near the edge 10 of blade 9 when the device is in use. Lather grooves 18 are provided in the holder 3, as shown in 4, said grooves extending along each si e of the respective fingers 16, so as to permit a proper dischargeof the lather and to provide comparatively large. recesses for receiving the lather directly from the face during the shaving operation. 1
In constructing the parts of ,the razor the blade 9 is made from some good quality of steel and comparatively thin, in the usual manner of blades of this character, but without o enings or notches. except the notch 13, w ereby .acomparatively strong and 'stifi blade is produced which is braced bythe holder 3 and the wedge 8. In forming the handle 1, holder 3 and wedge 8, the same are preferably formed from some plastic material, as for instance, celluloid, Prefs erably the fectly sanitary. structure 15 produced and 'be readily detected. .In operation, w osition shown in is ready for use an usual manner of safety device has been used an the same, a ressure by the thumb on the wedge 8 in t I e proper direction will cause the wedge to slide out of the hook'members 6 and 7, whereupon the wedge is perfectly loose and also the blade 9 is perfectly loose and may". be washed and dried, as well as the holder inserted in the holder until; themembers 11 and 12 strike agginst theedges of the members 4 and 5, an then the wedge is again insertedand pressed forward until the parts Fi .1 and 2 the device razors. After the are sufiiciently tight. Preferably the handle 1 is held in lace 'bv the threaded extension 2, whereby t e han beseparated when it is esired to store the same in a small place, though-if desired the handle and the holder coul one piece of material.
intentionally, the
celluloid is white, whereby a peren the'parts are in the may be used in the 3. The blade is then i it is desired to clean dleand he holder-.3 may be molded from Though white celg the luloid is preferable other materials could be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
l. A safety razor comprising a handled holder having overhanging resilient members, a centrally arranged V-shaped recess in its face at the rear edge, curved guard fingers and a plurality of depressions at the bases of the guard fingers and opening into spaces between said fingers, a blade provided at its ends with pro ections engagin the ends of the overhanging members 0 the holder and with a centrally arranged V-shaped notch and a wedge fitting under the overhanging members of the holder and having a centrally arranged V-shaped projection enga 'ng the recess of the holder and the note of the blade.
2. A safety razor, comprising a handle having a threaded socket in one end, a holder having a reduced and threaded extension engaging the threaded socket, and provided with overhanging hook members at its sides,
a centrally arranged recess in its face at the rear'edge, curved guard fingers, and depressions at the bases of the fingers and opening into the spaces between said fingers, a blade having at its ends projections enga 'ng the ends of the said members of the hofiier and with a notch in its rear edge, and a Wedge fitting under the members of the holder and having a projection fitting in the recess of the holder, the holder, handle and wedge being formed of celluloid.
3. A safety razor, comprising a holder having overhanging members, curved guard fingers, and grooves extending along the opposite sides of each finger, the. grooves of each two adjacent fingers merging into a roove in the body of the holder, said groove eing approximately of a width equal to the distance the fingers are apart, a blade having lugs engaging the ends of the overhanging members, and a wedge fitting under the overhanging members of the holder and locking the blade in position.
